# What is an A Record?

The A-record is the most basic and the most important DNS record type. They are used to translate domain names such as "[www.domain.com"](http://www.domain.com") into IP-addresses such as 123.123.123.123 (An IP Address is a unique string of numbers, usually shown in groups separated by periods).
